Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co. Tudric pewter and enamel three piece teaset no. 0231

£750

Item:     Archibald Knox for Liberty & Co. Tudric pewter and enamel three piece teaset no.0231
Origin:  England, 1903

Comprising pewter and enamel teapot, sugar bowl and milk jug, this stunning tea set was designed for Liberty & Co. Tudric by Archibald Knox in 1903. Each of the pieces is cast and hand-finished, with interlace ornament in relief of stylised honesty plants and four brilliant turquoise blue enamels complimenting the design.  The teapot is nicely finished with a wicker woven handle which has an Arts & Crafts interlocking pattern.

The teapot measures approximately 9.5 inches long and 4.5 inches tall (25 cm x 12 cm), and milk and sugar are approximately 4.75 inches in length and 3.75 inches tall (12 cm x 7 cm). Each piece is stamped with its Tudric mark registered Knox pattern number, as follows:

Tea pot:  English Pewter, Rd 420290, 0231
Sugar bowl: Made in England, TUDRIC, Rd 420290, 0231
Milk jug: Made in England, TUDRIC, Rd 420290, 0231

A truly iconic trio from the height of the Art Nouveau/Jugendstil and Arts & Crafts era. Archibald Knox (1864 – 1933) was the principal silver and pewter designer for Liberty & Co, and he created Celtic designs of the highest quality for the Tudric range.

Condition:
Original, unpolished and un-restored condition. As such, it does show age-related wear to the enamel roundels on milk and sugar jug and wicker handle on the tea pot. On the jug, two of the enamels are partially lost, and on the bowl two of the enamels have chips. The wicker handle on the teapot has loses to the to portion and fraying on the inside of the handle (please see images above). The enamels to the teapot are brilliantly intact. Even with slight imperfections, these iconic and important pieces of design still displays beautifully.
