Item: Lehmann Crawling Beetle no. 431
Origin: Germany, c. 1898
One of Lehmann’s most iconic toys, the brightly lithographed Crawling Beetle was first patented in 1898 and produced until 1935. The windup mechanism works on a fixed key, and when in motion the beetle crawls along flapping its wings.
Condition:
This is a lovely example which comes with its original box. Lehman boxes are a real find! The lithograph is bright and shiny, with a few scrapes and losses. The windup mechanism is working, and while the wings flap strongly, this old bug moves a bit slowly as he has lost the lower part of his middle left leg. The box is original and the paper litho label is excellent. The box has old tape around corners and is missing one flap from the lid. Overall, the box and toy are very good examples and display brilliantly.
