The detail on this miniature locomotive is truly extraordinary. Carved of ivory and measuring only 4 inches in length by 3 inches in height (10 cm x 7.5 cm), it is a rare and beautiful item.
Miniature ivories were frequently used in elaborate dollhouses in the 1800s. I acquired this item from a doll collector in Germany who had an amazing collection of ivory miniature dollhouse furniture and accessories.
The top of the train, which is padded in red silk, lifts off to reveal a small compartment also lined in red silk. The stunning craftsmanship of each little detail is apparent in its six wheels, smoke stack and intricately carved sides. An exquisite little item, which makes a stunning cabinet display.
Condition:
As evident from the photos, unfortunately the front left wheel is damaged. Apart from this, this stunning piece of antique carved ivory is in stunning condition.
