Antique Chinese Ivory Miniature ‘Snake-in-the-Can’

£195

Item:     Antique Chinese Ivory Miniature Snake-in-the-Can toy
Origin:  China, c. mid 1800’s

Made in China in the mid-19th century, this delightful antique ‘snake-in-the-can’ toy is expertly carved from ivory. The ‘can’ is beautifully carved, with narrow slats, bands and tiny holes.

The snake is a true work of art. He fits neatly in the barrel and then expands to over 12 inches in length with his elegantly spiraling body. The snake’s head is carved of wood, with glass eyes and a tiny felt tongue.

The snake’s body is extraordinary – so delicate and light, with magnificent spiraling  ivory and light brown colouring.

The can, or barrel, measures approximately 3 inches in height and 1 inch in diameter (7.5 cm x 2.5 cm). Turn the lid to remove and reveal the snake which can ‘grow’ to at least 14 inches (36 cm). It’s difficult to measure its actual length as it’s approx. 150 years old and I wouldn’t like to stretch it to its max.

Condition:
Over time and play, it appears that the snakes body has been mended as there is some old adhesive on a section of coil. Apart from that, the snake is absolutely superb and the carved ivory can is undamaged.
